Hey guys Im gonna be repainting my car soon. Im just not sure if I want to paint it the same color or paint it another color. If I keep it the same Im just gonna have about six coats of clear dumped on it to make it shine like hell. What do you guys think?

it would look pretty damn good with the extra clear on it. have you thought about changing the paint slightly to make it unique?

I think adding a little more pearl and alot of coats of clear to it would kick ass. If you change the complete color, it will be alot of work and money because of the engine compartment alone. Last thing you want in a big car show is a different color engine bay ya know. Just my 2 cents. Who is doing your paint?

The car has some deep chips and scratches in it and it is like 7 years old. I just want a fresh shine on the car to make it look bad ass. I'm probably just gonna repaint the car the same color and dump like 6 coats of clear on it.

Ok guys heres whats gonna go down in April when I do the pain job. Im gonna paint it the same color but with about 6 coats of clear to shine it off. Im gonna remove the trim and the Firebird emblems on the side of the car to clean it up a bit. Im going to be painting the nostils in the hood black as well as teh under side of the hood black. I will also be painting the grilles on the hood and the grills on the sides of the car in red. The Trans Am bumper will be put on with the CETA mod done to it, which is just the valance on the bumper painted black. I think that will make the car look sweet and its going to be costing me under 2 grand for it. So all in all not a bad deal.

It's a complete misconception that you get more shine by putting coat after coat after coat of clear on. The shine comes from the application and the polish...not the number of coats. The reason to go with multiple coats of clear is to achieve depth in the paint. However, 3-4 medium wet coats is PLENTY to achieve the desired depth. If you put too much clear on you will start to notice that the sharp edges in the bodylines aren't as crisp and sharp as they should be because you get buildup around them. Not to mention that the more coats you put on, the more likely the paint is to run. The thicker it is, the longer it takes to setup completely and if you get it too deep, it's hard to tell when it will be totally dry. Plus the thicker the paint, the easier it is to chip. Think long and hard before you put that many coats of clear on that car.

I hear ya bro. Im thining actually 4 coats of clear would be good enough then give it a good buff job. Then in abut 30 days after the paint sets up Ill give it a good wax job.
